Innovations in Strawberry Farming: Insights from expoSE & expodirekt Fair in Karlsruhe

Recently, our team had the pleasure of attending the expoSE & expodirekt fair in Karlsruhe, Germany, a pivotal event for agricultural professionals.

This year, our focus was on presenting innovative solutions to German strawberry farmers, particularly in combating root diseases.

The Critical Role of Prevention in Strawberry Farming

Strawberry farming in Germany has seen substantial growth, but it also faces significant challenges, especially concerning root health. Root diseases can severely impact both the quality of the harvest and the profitability of the crops. Therefore, it is essential to adopt techniques that mitigate these risks.

Cutting-Edge Solutions: Implementing Spacers

At the fair, we showcased the use of Spacers, which are minimal surfaces that allow substrate bags to be nearly suspended in the air. This method not only prevents direct soil contact but also enhances air circulation around the roots, crucial for disease prevention. By elevating the bags, moisture at the plant base is reduced, a key factor in preventing pathogen growth.

Efficient Drainage: Cost Savings and Sustainability

We also introduced a channeling system beneath the substrate bags. This system collects drainage, enabling disinfection and reuse. This approach is not only environmentally friendly but also offers significant cost savings for farmers. By reusing water and nutrients, resources are optimized, and production costs are lowered.

The Future of Hydroponics in Germany

Hydroponics is gaining momentum in Germany, and events like expoSE & expodirekt are vital for promoting innovation and knowledge exchange. Adopting hydroponic techniques not only enhances farming efficiency but also helps farmers adapt to changing climate and market conditions.

Our visit to the fair was a valuable experience, allowing us to connect with farmers and industry experts, share our solutions, and understand the current needs of strawberry farming in Germany. We are dedicated to supporting farmers in adopting sustainable and efficient practices that maximize production and minimize risks.
