CHIOR SE: controlled mixing for slurry and digestate, combining process stability and energy efficiency

In the day-to-day operation of a livestock farm or a biogas plant, slurry mixing is not merely a technical detail, but a factor that directly affects substrate quality, operational continuity and running costs

In the day-to-day operation of a livestock farm or a biogas plant, slurry mixing is not merely a technical detail, but a factor that directly affects substrate quality, operational continuity and running costs. Livestock slurry and digestate are inherently variable: solids content, viscosity, tendency to stratify and surface crust formation change with the seasons, feeding regimes and retention time in the tank. In this context, the choice of agitator becomes a strategic decision.

The CHIOR SE submersible agitators, developed and distributed by SAVECO, a WAMGROUP brand specialized in wastewater treatment technologies, are designed to adapt to these changing conditions. Their purpose is to keep the substrate homogeneous even at high solids content, reducing sediment build-up and limiting situations that can affect downstream stages of the process, from pumpability to anaerobic digestion.

Homogeneity as a process parameter
The aim is not simply to create movement inside the tank, but to achieve effective mixing: keeping solids in suspension, reducing dead zones, controlling stratification and ensuring uniform temperature and concentration. This approach is reflected in the three-blade stainless steel propeller, engineered to deliver reliable mixing performance even under demanding conditions. The availability of different propeller geometries and diameters makes it possible to optimise the balance between performance and energy consumption according to tank volume and fluid characteristics.

Three rotational speeds for different requirements
A distinctive feature of the range is the availability of three speed configurations, each designed to address specific operating needs:
• LE – 140 rpm, suitable for primary mixing of large volumes;
• ST – 280 rpm, appropriate for most standard applications;
• VE – 355 rpm, intended for breaking surface crusts and managing more pronounced stratification.

This approach helps avoid oversizing, which leads to unnecessary energy use, as well as undersizing, which encourages deposit formation and reduces system efficiency.

Energy efficiency as an overall result
Efficiency is not only a matter of installed power. A homogeneous substrate helps to reduce load peaks on pumps and transfer lines, limits the need for corrective interventions and improves the stability of subsequent process stages. In this context, the use of IE3 (Premium Efficiency) submersible motors contributes to keeping consumption under control while maintaining adequate thrust performance.

Reliability for continuous operation
Storage tanks and digesters operate in demanding environments, with limited accessibility and aggressive fluids. The design of CHIOR SE mixers addresses these constraints through specific construction features: IP68 protection rating, thermal probe to prevent overheating, cemented carbide mechanical seals, self-lubricating radial bearings, NBR O-rings and EM7 rubber-sheathed cable with stainless steel cable gland. The gearbox, based on oil-bath planetary gears, is engineered to ensure long-term operational continuity.

Simplified installation and maintenance
Ease of installation has a direct impact on commissioning times and operator safety. The adjustable stainless steel bracket allows quick mounting on a vertical pipe, with a geometry designed for immediate and controlled fixing. The modular design also facilitates maintenance operations, reducing downtime and simplifying spare parts management. For the higher power range (11–22 kW), a reinforced support is available to ease handling and positioning of the larger units.

Safety and regulatory compliance
For use in classified areas, the range includes ATEX-compliant versions for models from 11 to 22 kW. This option meets the requirements of plants subject to specific safety constraints, while maintaining operating standards consistent with the required performance.

A range designed for agricultural and biogas applications
The CHIOR SE series covers power ratings from 2.2 to 22 kW, with configurations suitable for both livestock farms and anaerobic digestion plants. Performance varies according to model and selected speed: in the 11–22 kW range, for example, the LE version can achieve flow rates of up to 16,000 m³/h (in water at 20 °C), while the ST and VE configurations are intended for different operating scenarios. Actual values depend on operating conditions and the characteristics of the fluid being handled.

Mixing as a process lever
Treating mixing as an integral part of the process means focusing on:
• substrate homogeneity even with high solids content;
• reduced energy consumption through high-efficiency motors and optimised propeller design;
• reliability in continuous operation;
• fast installation and simplified maintenance;
• availability of ATEX versions for critical applications.

Correct sizing starts with an analysis of operating conditions: large volumes, general-purpose use or the need to manage surface crusts. From this assessment derive the choice between LE, ST and VE configurations and the most suitable power rating for each individual installation.
