Playing on pigs' sense of smell to improve their well-being

Giocare sull'olfatto dei maiali per migliorare il loro benessere

Pigs have an extremely developed sense of smell: their olfactory range is around a hundred meters! This ability not only helps them find food, but also allows them to identify other individuals in the group.

Unfortunately, the olfactory environment in farms, sometimes degraded by the presence of chemicals or gaseous emissions, could contribute to a decrease in pig welfare. This is, at least, the conclusion of a recent study conducted by Swedish researchers[1].

Playing with odors is therefore an avenue worth exploring to enrich the pigs' immediate environment and thus reduce their stress.

That's why we developed Sodex Pigs, an anti-bite product that modifies the olfactory profile and makes it more neutral. Its strong cinnamon scent helps prevent aggressive behavior in animals and provides lasting calm. It is therefore an excellent solution for combating tail biting in pig farms.
