Step 1: Identification

We first suggest all businesses remain vigilant to the threat of diseases that may influence their businesses. For example, a poultry farmer would keep up to date with global poultry news and if in the event a threat such as Avian Influenza is identified in a neighbouring country, remaining vigilant to events in your own country are of the utmost important.

However, being able to identify the signs of a disease are of the utmost importance. Know your industry and the diseases that may impact your businesses. Step 2: Containment

Immediately create an infection free safe zone, for all animals that have not been infected by disease. Contain all diseased animals in a secure environment, and practice stringent procedures to prevent the cross contamination between infected and safe zones. Ensuring no waste or by-products are transferred between the two sites eliminates further cross contamination. Additionally, stringent hygiene procedures should be utilised, utilising PPE where necessary.

Step 3: Action

In the event of fallen livestock due to the disease, immediate and effective action should be taken to safely dispose of carcasses and animal-by-products produced during the isolation period, which may include feed, straw and other items utilised in its keep. All items should be disposed of as quickly as possible, however if it must be stored for a period, it should be stored in an isolated location.
