Disease Outbreak Management

The Waste Spectrum 3 Step Solution To Disease Outbreak Management

The agricultural industry has experienced first-hand the effects that disease outbreak can have on businesses and livelihoods over the past few decades. During the 90’s the world watched as the effects of BSE caused catastrophic effects for the British beef industry, seeing a ban on British beef exports to EU and United States. Whilst in recent years outbreaks of Avian Influenza and African Swine Fever have had similar effects on the poultry and pork industries, the agricultural industry has had to brace itself in preparation for further destruction and devastation. With nearly 30 years’ experience creating unique solutions for bio-secure and efficient waste management for the agricultural industry. Working alongside our clients to gain a greater understanding about the risks they face and the preventative methods that can be put in place. Our team have identified a 3-step solution that can help prevent the spread of disease and ultimately protect livelihoods.

Step 1: Identification

We first suggest all businesses remain vigilant to the threat of diseases that may influence their businesses. For example, a poultry farmer would keep up to date with global poultry news and if in the event a threat such as Avian Influenza is identified in a neighbouring country, remaining vigilant to events in your own country are of the utmost important.

However, being able to identify the signs of a disease are of the utmost importance. Know your industry and the diseases that may impact your businesses. There are numerous resources at your fingertips that can help you research diseases and the signs your livestock may display if infected with them.

Step 2: Containment

Immediately create an infection free safe zone, for all animals that have not been infected by disease. Contain all diseased animals in a secure environment, and practice stringent procedures to prevent the cross contamination between infected and safe zones. Ensuring no waste or by-products are transferred between the two sites eliminates further cross contamination. Additionally, stringent hygiene procedures should be utilised, utilising PPE where necessary.

Step 3: Action

In the event of fallen livestock due to the disease, immediate and effective action should be taken to safely dispose of carcasses and animal-by-products produced during the isolation period, which may include feed, straw and other items utilised in its keep. All items should be disposed of as quickly as possible, however if it must be stored for a period, it should be stored in an isolated location. Use a Waste Spectrum incinerator to destroy all contaminated waste effectively and quickly. Incineration is the most effective and bio-secure solution to waste management, with no other process comparable in terms of bio-security and efficiency. Our animal incinerators come in both mobile and static forms and can be deployed quickly and easily to sites in need.
