WAS has a newly elected president: Ph.D. Antonio Garza de Yta from Mexico

Ph.D. Antonio Garza de Yta, the current headmaster of the Technological University of the Sea of ​​Tamaulipas, Mexico since 2016, has just been elected President of the World Aquaculture Society, WAS.

The World Aquaculture Society announced the results of its most recent presidential election for the representation of more than 100 member countries over the next three years (until 2022).

About the new president

Antonio Garza de Yta, a renowned international aquaculture professional, who holds a Masters degree and a Ph.D. in Aquaculture from the University of Auburn, USA. He is an aquaculture expert, FAO frequent consultant, as well as a specialist in strategic planning. Ex-director of Extension and International Training for the University of Auburn and creator of the Certification for Aquaculture Professionals in that academic institution.

He is also co-founder of the Global Initiative for Life and Leadership through Fishery Products. And has contributed to the national aquaculture framework of Mexico as General Director of Planning, Programming, and Evaluation for CONAPESCA.

His position as elected president for WAS is encouraging for the Latin American and Asian aquaculture sector, as he has expressed ideas and impulse to develop greater representation within the Society for this parts of the world, as well as to increase the ranges of proportionality for all sectors within the WAS. He is a supporter of broadening the promotion of initiatives and decision making, sociability and integration of conferences and services for members of the association and key actors of the aquaculture sectors around the globe. All these proposals seem to be strengths and initial impulse that come along to the position with Antonio Garza de Yta.

So over the next 3 years where he will serve one year as President-Elect, another as Chairman and the last as Counselor for the WAS, Garza de Yta will have the opportunity to contribute, promote and enhance aquaculture for its development and strengthening on many fronts of current critical relevance.

The WAS is the largest and most recognized organization of aquaculture professionals in the world, as well as the most important platform for professional interaction and exchange of information and knowledge of the sector. The WAS, through its network of conferences worldwide, promotes international scientific cooperation and supports hundreds of students to integrate into professional life.
